Biography

Nathaniel Essex was a Victorian geneticist who read Darwin and decided evolution was too slow to be left to nature. Experimenting on his own family cost him a child and a wife; it also caught the attention of Apocalypse, who offered him power and rebuilt his body into something that no longer ages. Essex reinvented himself as Mister Sinister — a pale, red-eyed dandy with a diamond set into his forehead — and spent the next century and a half breeding mutants the way other men breed dogs, always with one bloodline in mind.

That bloodline is the Summers family. Sinister engineered Madelyne Pryor as a Jean Grey clone specifically to marry Scott Summers and produce a child, and got Cable out of the arrangement. He sent the Marauders into the Morlock tunnels for the Mutant Massacre, stitched Chimera soldiers together from stolen genetics, and keeps a warehouse of spare cloned bodies so that death is only an inconvenience. Krakoa was his masterpiece: a Quiet Council seat, a genetics lab under a nation's protection, and quiet corruption of the resurrection protocols themselves.

Powers

  • Genetic Self-Manipulation

He rewrites his own cells at will, closing wounds, changing shape and adapting to whatever just hurt him.

  • Telepathy

He reads minds, plants suggestions and rummages through memories with clinical detachment.

  • Telekinesis

He shifts matter and shields himself with thought alone, usually while continuing to talk.

  • Immortality Through Cloning

Banks of prepared bodies receive his consciousness on death, making him almost impossible to permanently kill.

  • Superhuman Strength and Durability

Apocalypse's augmentation left him able to trade blows with front-line X-Men when talking fails.

Abilities

  • One of the finest geneticists on Earth
  • Century-scale strategist who plans in generations rather than years
  • Expert in cloning and, latterly, resurrection protocols
  • Manipulator who always prefers a proxy to a fight

Weaknesses

  • Vanity — he cannot resist explaining himself at length
  • Obsession with the Summers and Grey bloodlines makes him predictable
  • Dependent on labs, samples and infrastructure that can be destroyed
  • Apocalypse's original conditioning left him permanently subordinate to his maker

Comics history

Claremont built Sinister out of pure dread — a name the Marauders whispered for roughly a year before Marc Silvestri finally drew the man. Claremont has since said his original concept was for Sinister to be the psychic projection of a frightened little boy, a far stranger idea than the Victorian geneticist Marvel eventually printed, and the Essex origin arrived years later via The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix. He was a 1990s fixture, a body-hopping schemer under Grant Morrison, an Apocalypse-tier threat in Messiah Complex, and finally the villain who broke Krakoa, seeding an entire line-wide dystopia in Sins of Sinister.

Trivia

  • Sinister was a name long before he was a face: the Marauders answered to him for around a year of comics before readers ever saw the man himself.
  • Chris Claremont has said he originally conceived Sinister as the psychic projection of a frightened little boy — a much stranger character than the one Marvel went with.
  • Essex Corp was teased in the post-credits scene of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), setting up a Sinister film that never happened.
  • Marvel let him run Krakoa's genetics programme in plain sight for four years of publishing before the other shoe dropped in Sins of Sinister.

Frequently asked

Is Mister Sinister a mutant?
He was born an ordinary human — a Victorian scientist named Nathaniel Essex — and Apocalypse rebuilt his body with Celestial-derived technology. Whatever he is now, he was not born with it, which is part of why he studies mutants with such clinical envy.
Why is Mister Sinister obsessed with Cyclops?
Sinister believes the Summers and Grey genetic lines are the key to producing a mutant powerful enough to destroy Apocalypse. That is why he cloned Jean Grey as Madelyne Pryor and pushed her into Scott's life — Cable was the entire point of the exercise.
How do you kill Mister Sinister?
Mostly you cannot. He keeps banks of cloned bodies and transfers his consciousness on death, so killing him just resets him to his last backup. Beating him means finding and destroying the labs, which is why his real defeats read like heists rather than fights.
