The Complete MCU Chronological Watch Order (Updated for 2026)

There are two correct ways to watch the MCU and only one of them is a timeline. Release order is how the story was told, complete with the reveals and the escalation the filmmakers designed. Chronological order is how the story happened, and it produces a very different experience — slower at the start, far more coherent through the middle, and genuinely clarifying once the Blip arrives.

This is the chronological version, built on in-universe placement rather than premiere dates, and updated for the state of the slate in 2026.

Release Order vs Chronological Order: Which Should You Pick?

• First-time viewer: release order. Captain Marvel as film two spoils the entire tension of the 1990s as an untold era, and Nick Fury's arc reads backwards.
• Rewatching before Doomsday: chronological. The Multiverse Saga only makes sense if you can see how tightly Phase 4 and 5 are packed into 2024 to 2027.
• Watching with someone new who only wants the essentials: chronological, skipping the standalone series.
• Studying the timeline itself: chronological, with the alternate-universe shelf kept strictly separate. Mixing them is what makes people think the MCU is incoherent when it mostly is not.

The Full Chronological Watch Order

The Five Placements That Confuse Everyone

1. Captain Marvel is a Phase 3 film set in 1995, which makes it the second entry chronologically and the earliest look at S.H.I.E.L.D. before the Avengers existed.
2. Black Widow is a Phase 4 film set in 2016, slotting between Civil War and Infinity War — its 2024 graveyard coda is the only part of it set after Endgame.
3. Homecoming carries an on-screen '8 years later' card that would place it in 2020. It is an acknowledged continuity error; the film sits in 2016.
4. Far From Home is a Phase 3 film set in 2024, so it lands after two Phase 4 series in chronological order.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place a few months after the first film, in 2014 — not after Age of Ultron, despite releasing two years later.

The Projects That Sit Outside the Timeline

These do not belong in the numbered list, and forcing them in is the single most common way people break their own chronology. Each takes place in a different reality, outside time, or in a separate continuity altogether.

Loki is the one people fight about. The series is genuinely unplaceable in a linear list because the TVA exists outside time, and its consequences apply retroactively across the whole franchise. The Compressed Watch Order Before Doomsday

If you have limited time before Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December 2026, this is the shortest sequence that leaves you fully equipped.

1. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — the stakes, the Blip and the roster reset.
2. Loki, both seasons — the multiverse rules everything after 2023 runs on.
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — incursions, Earth-838 and the Illuminati.
4. Spider-Man: No Way Home — the first mass crossover, and the reason Brand New Day exists.
5. Deadpool & Wolverine — the Fox universe formally entered into the cosmology, plus anchor beings and the Void.
6. Thunderbolts* — the current state of the roster in 2027.
7. The Fantastic Four: First Steps — Earth-828 and the mid-credits hook straight into Doomsday.

How the Order Will Change After Secret Wars

Kevin Feige has described Secret Wars as the end of the Multiverse Saga and a reset point for what follows, with The X-Men arriving 15 December 2028.
