Biography
Ronan is the Kree Empire's Supreme Public Accuser, a role that combines prosecutor, judge and executioner into one enormous man with a Universal Weapon. He debuted in Fantastic Four #65 in 1967 to arrest Earth for the crime of existing near Kree space, and Marvel has spent sixty years using him to demonstrate that the Kree do not distinguish between law and violence.
His better stories come from the tension between duty and empire. He has served the Supreme Intelligence, overthrown it, entered a political marriage with the Inhuman Crystal, ruled Kree space and fought alongside his enemies against the Annihilation Wave when the alternative was extinction. The MCU dropped all of that and made him a genocidal fanatic in a hood, which sells tickets but leaves the interesting character on the page.

Comics history
Lee and Kirby introduced him during their Kree-heavy stretch of Fantastic Four in 1967, and he became a fixture of the Kree-Skrull War and the Captain Marvel titles. His hammer, the Universal Weapon, was Marvel's original cosmic gavel, and stories have always framed him as a man who genuinely believes in the law he enforces.
The 2000s gave him depth. An arranged Kree-Inhuman marriage to Crystal turned him into a political figure rather than a thug, and Annihilation: Ronan in 2006 set up his role in the war against the Annihilation Wave, where he fought alongside the very species he had spent centuries prosecuting. He later served under Black Bolt's Kree-Inhuman regime.

Why is MCU Ronan so different?
Guardians of the Galaxy recast him as a Kree religious extremist rejecting the peace treaty with Xandar, which gave the film a clean, aggressive villain. The comics version's legalism, politics and reluctant alliances did not fit a two-hour origin story.
