The story

Having shot her adoptive father figure in the eye, Maya Lopez returns to Tamaha, Oklahoma, to the Choctaw family she left and the skating rink her cousin runs. Fisk follows her, because he is incapable of letting anything go, and because he genuinely believes he loves her.

The series is a small-scale crime story about a woman reconnecting to a lineage she rejected, with ancestral visions granting her a power the comics never gave her. It is the only Marvel Spotlight title, released as a single drop, and it was cancelled after one season.

Characters

Easter eggs

  • Charlie Cox's Daredevil appears in flashback in the yellow suit, fighting Maya during her New York years.
  • Fisk's eye injury from Hawkeye's finale is carried over intact, and the series shows him surviving it.
  • Maya's ancestral connection to Chafa and her Choctaw lineage powers are an invention for the series, not from the comics.
  • The Tamaha, Oklahoma setting and the Choctaw Nation's history are treated as specific rather than generic, including a pre-contact origin sequence.
  • Fisk's fairground flashback and his relationship with Maya's father recast Hawkeye's Kingpin as a man who genuinely thinks he is family.
  • Echo's comics powers — photographic reflexes that let her copy anyone's movements — appear here mainly in her fight choreography rather than as a plot device.

Trivia

  • It is the first and only series released under the Marvel Spotlight banner, positioned as a standalone street-level story.
  • It was the first MCU series released entirely in one drop rather than weekly.
  • Alaqua Cox is Menominee and deaf, and the production employed Choctaw language and ASL consultants throughout.
  • Sydney Freeland, who directed three episodes, is Navajo, and the series had significant Indigenous representation behind the camera.
  • A substantial portion of the dialogue is in ASL or Choctaw with subtitles, unusual for a Marvel production.
  • Marvel cancelled the series after one season, and Cox has not appeared in the MCU since.
  • It carried a TV-MA rating, the first Marvel Studios project to do so.

Reviews

Critics

Echo's grounded scale and Alaqua Cox's magnetic lead performance are undercut by a thin plot that struggles to fill even five episodes.

The MarvelGossips verdict

Admirable, specific and structurally undernourished — a show with a genuinely fresh cultural perspective and not enough story to carry it. Cox and D'Onofrio are both very good, and the ancestral-power material feels bolted on rather than built in. It deserved a second season it was never going to get.

Frequently asked

Was Echo cancelled?
Yes. Marvel confirmed it would not continue beyond its first season, and it remains the only Marvel Spotlight title ever produced. Alaqua Cox has not appeared in the MCU since.
Do I need to watch Hawkeye first?
Yes. Maya's entire relationship with Fisk, her father's death and the eye injury she inflicts all come from Hawkeye, and Echo opens on the immediate aftermath.
What is Marvel Spotlight?
A banner Marvel introduced to signal a grounded, self-contained story requiring no wider MCU knowledge. Echo was the first and, as of 2026, the only project released under it.
Are Echo's powers different from the comics?
Substantially. The comics' Echo has photographic reflexes; the series adds ancestral abilities inherited through her Choctaw lineage, letting her access her forebears' skills. The change was developed with Choctaw consultants.
