Is the Fox X-Men Universe Being Formally Absorbed? The Doomsday Casting Says Yes

Marvel's confirmed cast list for Avengers: Doomsday includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum. That is not a nostalgia cameo. Six of those seven headlined Fox's X-Men films between 2000 and 2016, and the seventh shot a Gambit film that was never released. Assembling that group in one Marvel Studios production is the single loudest thing the company has done since it bought the rights.

What Has Already Been Established On Screen

The absorption theory is not built on wishful thinking. Marvel has spent four projects laying the mechanism, and each one moved the ball.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the load-bearing one. It formalised the Fox films as a real, numbered universe rather than a vague memory, established that a universe dies when its anchor being dies, and staged the whole third act in a scrapyard of discarded franchises. Whatever else that film was, it was Marvel writing the Fox library into its own cosmology with a legal-sounding vocabulary.

Theory One: Absorption by Incursion

The mechanically cleanest theory. Multiverse of Madness taught a mass audience that when two universes collide, at least one is destroyed — and it showed them the rubble. If Earth-10005 incurs with Earth-616 during Doomsday or Secret Wars, the survivors of the Fox universe end up in the MCU by physics rather than by handwave. Nobody has to explain why Magneto is suddenly on the same Earth as the Avengers. He is there because his own Earth stopped existing.

This has a nasty edge, and it is the reason we rate it highly: it lets Marvel keep the actors and retire the continuity in the same scene.

Theory Two: Doom Is Doing the Absorbing

The comics version. In Jonathan Hickman's 2015 Secret Wars, Doom salvages fragments of dying realities and stitches them into one planet where each region keeps its own rules. Applied here, the Fox universe does not merge with the MCU — it becomes a province of something Doom builds. That would explain why Marvel could cast Stewart and McKellen as their own characters, from their own timeline, without needing to reconcile a single continuity error. On Battleworld, contradictions are geography.

Theory Three: They Are Variants, Not Originals

The deflationary reading, and the one most likely to be technically correct. Stewart's Professor X in Multiverse of Madness was explicitly an Earth-838 variant, not the Fox character — he wore the yellow hoverchair from the 1992 animated series and died within ten minutes. Marvel can cast every one of these actors as variants, honour the audience's memory, and commit to nothing.

The counter-argument is volume. One variant is a wink. Seven is a policy.

Theory Four: This Is the Send-Off, Not the Merger

The X-Men is dated 15 December 2028, directed by Jake Schreier, written by Michael Lesslie, with zero casting announced and Feige on record preferring largely unknown young actors. Schreier has publicly shot down viral fan-casting. Read that alongside the Doomsday list and a different story appears: the Fox cast is not being absorbed, it is being honoured on the way out, so that 2028 can start clean.

You do not hire seven legacy leads to introduce a franchise. You hire them to close one.

The Two Continuities That Complicate Everything

Two X-projects sit outside this entirely, and any honest theory has to say so. X-Men '97 continues the 1992 animated series in its own continuity — season two premiered 1 July 2026 with a third season confirmed, and at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes it is the highest-rated Marvel property currently running. And Logan sits in a divergent 2029 on its own branch, which Deadpool & Wolverine pointedly refused to overwrite. Logan's death is what killed Earth-10005 in the first place — a detail Wade Wilson spends an entire film trying and failing to undo. Marvel protected that ending. It is the strongest single sign that absorption, when it comes, will be respectful rather than acquisitive.
