CONFIRMED: Marvel's official logline states that Doomsday follows 'beloved heroes from three distinct universes' set on a deadly collision course, facing an existential threat unlike anything they have encountered. Anthony and Joe Russo direct from a Michael Waldron screenplay, Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, and Marvel's own cast list confirms an ensemble spanning the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Wakanda, Talokan and the Fox-era X-Men, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum. The film opens 18 December 2026, having moved from its original 1 May 2026 date, and the first trailer arrived in July 2026.
CONFIRMED, from San Diego Comic-Con 2026: Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers — but not as Captain America. Anthony Mackie, in a Variety interview after the panel, put it plainly: "Steve Rogers is returning, not Captain America... in the comic book, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad," pointing at the 1970s comics identity Rogers adopted after giving up the shield, which this site's own Captain America profile already lists among his aliases. Evans himself said at CinemaCon 2026: "I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there's a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers." Hayley Atwell is also confirmed returning as Peggy Carter, revealed at the same Hall H panel; Atwell has described the film as "an existential epic" and teased Peggy responding to that scale "in a very different light than fans have seen before."
REPORTED, NOT CONFIRMED: Neither Marvel nor the cast has explained how an elderly Steve Rogers — last seen living out a full life with Peggy Carter after Endgame — fits into Doomsday's story, or whether Evans and Atwell are playing the same characters audiences said goodbye to or multiverse variants. Nothing official has been said about Doom's origin, whether he is a Tony Stark variant, how the three universes are designated, or which characters survive. Runtime, act structure and the mechanics of the incursion remain entirely unconfirmed, and scooper claims about specific deaths should be treated as rumour.

The MarvelGossips verdict
Unreleased at the time of writing. Marvel is betting the saga on a recast lead villain, a cast list longer than Infinity War's and an audience that has spent four years being told the multiverse matters. The Russos are the right people for the logistics, and the open question is whether any of the three universes will feel like a place rather than a corridor.
