Biography

Before this universe there was another one, and when it collapsed the explorer Galan of Taa flew into the heart of the dying cosmos rather than wait to be extinguished. He merged with the Sentience of the Universe inside the cosmic egg, and what emerged when the Big Bang came was not a survivor. It was Galactus, a being that must consume the life energy of entire worlds to exist.

Marvel has spent sixty years insisting he is not a monster and readers have spent sixty years arguing. The case for the defence was made in open court in Fantastic Four #262, where Reed Richards argued that Galactus is a balancing force written into the structure of reality, that the universe requires him, and that Eternity itself would not permit his death. The court agreed. The billions he has eaten still do not.

He works through heralds because the search is beneath him: the Silver Surfer, Firelord, Terrax, Air-Walker, Nova, Morg. He fears almost nothing, having been imprisoned, drained, used as a weapon by Annihilus, and in 2016 transformed into Galactus the Lifebringer, seeding worlds instead of stripping them. That reversal did not last. The hunger always comes back, because the hunger is what he is.

Comics history

The Galactus Trilogy in Fantastic Four #48 to #50 in 1966 is the moment superhero comics grew a cosmology. Kirby delivered a god in purple armour, Lee gave him the voice of an indifferent force of nature, and the resolution turned on Reed threatening him with the Ultimate Nullifier rather than punching him. Thor #168 and #169 in 1969 filled in his origin as Galan of Taa.

Fantastic Four #262 in 1984 is the other essential text. John Byrne staged the Trial of Reed Richards, in which Reed was prosecuted for saving Galactus' life and won by arguing cosmic necessity, with Eternity called as a witness. It is still the definitive statement of where Galactus sits in Marvel's power hierarchy.

Annihilation in 2006 showed what happens when someone smaller gets lucky: Annihilus captured Galactus and used him as a weapon of mass destruction, until Nova and the Surfer freed him and he burned the Annihilation Wave out of the sky. Al Ewing's Ultimates in 2016 went the other direction, transforming him into Galactus the Lifebringer, a creator rather than a consumer.

Is Galactus a villain?
Marvel deliberately refuses to file him as one. He destroys populated worlds, which is monstrous, but he does it out of biological necessity as a balancing force built into the universe. Fantastic Four #262 put the question to a cosmic court, and the verdict was that the universe needs him.
Who is stronger, Galactus or Thanos?
Galactus, comfortably, at their baseline levels. Thanos only surpasses him while holding something like the Infinity Gauntlet or the Heart of the Universe. Without an artefact, Thanos treats a confrontation with Galactus as a problem to be schemed around rather than fought.
Can Galactus be killed?
