Biography
Raven Darkholme has been alive longer than most nations' constitutions, and she has worn all of them. Her mutation rewrites her body at the cellular level: face, voice, fingerprints, retinas, gender, age. What makes her dangerous is not the trick but the patience behind it. Mystique spent decades embedded inside governments and intelligence services while running the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants after hours, and her Brotherhood's attempt on Senator Robert Kelly is the spark that lights the Days of Future Past timeline. She does not want to be understood. She wants to be already inside the room.
Her loyalties run through exactly three people. Destiny, the precognitive Irene Adler, was the love of her life; Chris Claremont wrote them as a couple for years without being allowed to say so on the page. Rogue is the daughter she raised and repeatedly ruined. Nightcrawler is the son she abandoned. Everything else is negotiable, which is how the same woman led the Brotherhood, took a government paycheck with Freedom Force, and later served on the X-Men under Cyclops. On Krakoa she finally named her price: she would work for Xavier and Magneto, and in exchange they would resurrect Irene.

Comics history
Claremont built Mystique to be unsolvable. She debuted in Ms. Marvel, migrated into Uncanny X-Men as the Brotherhood's brain, and became the engine of Days of Future Past. Her Freedom Force years let Marvel play her as a state asset without softening her one degree. Brian K. Vaughan's Mystique gave her a solo espionage book, and 2000s writers finally pinned down her parentage of Nightcrawler. The Krakoa era paid off the thing Claremont could never print: Jonathan Hickman and Kieron Gillen built an entire Quiet Council power struggle around Mystique's demand that Destiny be resurrected, turning a decades-old love story into the political fault line of a nation.

- As Raven Darkholme she held a senior United States government post while running a mutant terrorist cell in her off hours, and the alias Ronnie Lake covered another long embed.
- Rogue is her adoptive daughter, and the two of them are Marvel's most durable toxic mother-daughter act: Rogue has quit her, fought her and forgiven her more than once.

How old is Mystique?
Marvel has never given a firm number, but she has been active since at least the nineteenth century and her shapeshifting keeps her body from ageing. She and Destiny were together for decades before Rogue or the Brotherhood existed. Functionally she is one of the oldest mutants still walking around who is not Apocalypse or Selene.
Is Mystique Rogue's real mother?
No. Rogue is her adoptive daughter, taken in as a runaway teenager and raised alongside Destiny. The bond is real enough that Rogue still calls her Momma and has never fully escaped her, but there is no blood relation.
Why did Mystique join the X-Men?
Cyclops recruited her precisely because she is a liar, wanting a spy who could go where the X-Men could not be seen. Mystique used the position exactly as everyone expected, working her own agenda from inside the team. Krakoa was the same trade at a larger scale, with Destiny's resurrection as the asking price.
