Biography

Sixty years of X-Men comics have produced exactly one henchman who outlasted every master he ever served. Mortimer Toynbee turned up in the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as Magneto's grovelling errand boy, a hunched mutant with monstrously overdeveloped legs who fetched, crouched and absorbed abuse in exchange for scraps of approval. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby built him as comic relief, and Chris Claremont later gave that cringing a cause: Magneto had spent years psychically breaking him. The reveal changed everything, because it meant the Toad was not naturally a worm.

Cut loose, he turned out to have ambition, competence and a grudge. He built and led his own Brotherhood, held his own against X-Men who had written him off, and slowly became the guy other villains underestimate exactly once. The Krakoa era completed the arc in the least likely way possible: a nation of his own, a relationship with Paige Guthrie, the X-Man called Husk, and a family life. Marvel's most disposable lackey ended up with the one thing his old boss kept promising and never delivered.

Powers

  • Superhuman Leaping

Massively overdeveloped leg muscles launch him dozens of feet in a single spring-loaded jump.

  • Prehensile Tongue

His tongue extends several feet, strong enough to snatch weapons, disarm opponents and haul him off the ground.

  • Enhanced Agility

He fights in a scrambling, wall-hopping style that makes him miserable to pin down.

  • Toxic Secretions

Modern depictions give him a corrosive, blinding mucus he spits with unpleasant accuracy.

  • Cling and Crawl

He scales sheer surfaces on all fours, an ambush predator in a room full of talkers.

Abilities

  • Skilled mechanic who kept Magneto's machinery running
  • Ruthless instinct for which side is about to win
  • Surprisingly effective field tactician when he leads rather than follows

Weaknesses

  • Craves approval from people who despise him
  • No ranged offence worth the name
  • Physically frail next to the bruisers he recruits

Comics history

Toad is a Silver Age creation who survived by being useful to writers rather than to villains. Lee and Kirby needed a toady for Magneto's first Brotherhood; Claremont turned that into a study of an abuse victim; the 1990s let him lead his own Brotherhood; the early 2000s stuck him in Banshee's X-Corps; and the Krakoa era of 2019 to 2023 handed him citizenship, a partner and a child. He has never headlined a book, and that is precisely his value. Toad is the character Marvel uses to measure how much mutant society has actually changed, because he is always in the room and nobody ever expects anything of him.

Allies

  • Magneto
  • Husk
  • Blob
  • Brotherhood of Mutants

Enemies

  • X-Men
  • Professor X
  • Beast

Trivia

  • Ray Park played him in X-Men (2000) with barely a line of dialogue and stole the film's best action beat anyway, all crouch, spring and tongue, courtesy of the same physical performer behind Darth Maul.
  • Claremont's explanation for the grovelling was blunt: Magneto had been psychically dominating him for years. Freed from that, Toad promptly developed a spine and pointed it at his former master.
  • Of the five mutants in the very first Brotherhood, he is the only one still doing essentially the same job six decades later, while Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch went on to become Avengers.

Famous quotes

Everyone laughs at the Toad. They stop laughing when they are looking up at me.
You made me your footstool, Magneto. I made myself a leader.

Frequently asked

Why does Toad follow Magneto?
Originally because Magneto was psychically dominating him, a retcon Claremont used to explain decades of grovelling. Even after breaking free, Toad kept gravitating back toward mutant supremacist causes, because Magneto's Brotherhood was the first place that ever told him he mattered.
How high can Toad jump?
His legs let him clear multiple storeys in a single leap and cross large rooms without touching the floor, and he can absorb the landing impact that would break an ordinary human. Combined with a prehensile tongue and wall-clinging, that mobility is why a low-powered mutant keeps surviving fights he should lose.
