Who Will Survive Avengers: Doomsday? A Speculative Read On Every Major Character

Nobody knows, and this article is speculation from its first line to its last. Marvel has confirmed no deaths, no survivors and no plot details for Avengers: Doomsday, which opens 18 December 2026. What follows is our own reasoning, built from the only public evidence that exists - who is on the confirmed cast list, what Avengers: Secret Wars needs on 17 December 2027, and how Marvel has historically handled two-part finales. Treat every judgement below as a reasoned guess. None of it is reported, leaked or confirmed.

The Ground Rules For This Exercise

There is a version of this article that pretends to knowledge, cites anonymous scoopers, and gets shared enormously. We are not writing that one, because in December it would be exposed and because presenting rumour as reporting is how entertainment sites lose the trust they spend years building. There is no leaked script. There are no confirmed deaths. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either guessing or repeating someone else's guess.

What is possible is structured reasoning, which is more useful than it sounds. A film's survivor list is constrained by real-world facts that are partly visible from outside: which actors are needed for announced future projects, which characters carry unfinished arcs, what a two-part finale structurally requires, and where the franchise is heading after the reset. Those constraints do not tell you the answer. They narrow the field, and narrowing the field honestly is worth more than guessing confidently.

How We Are Reasoning

1. Secret Wars need. The 2027 film is the actual conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. Anyone essential to it almost certainly walks out of Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. is the only confirmed Secret Wars cast member, which is itself a deliberate information blackout.
2. Narrative completeness. Characters with arcs the MCU has just started - newer leads introduced in the last three years - are poor candidates for exits, because the studio has not yet recouped the introduction.
3. Franchise obligations elsewhere. Characters attached to announced or reported future projects are unlikely to be written out first. Reported 2028 and 2029 slots, and the confirmed X-Men film in December 2028, constrain who Marvel can afford to remove.
4. Legacy send-off logic. Two-part finales historically use the first film to raise stakes with a small number of high-impact losses, and the second to resolve. Infinity War and Endgame followed exactly that pattern.
5. Actor career stage. Performers who have publicly finished long runs are structurally available for exits in a way that newly cast leads are not. This is inference from public career history, not from any inside information.

The Survival Table

The pattern that emerges is not a body count. It is a boundary. The characters we rate as most exposed are those whose franchise runway has already been spent, and the ones we rate as safest - Yelena Belova being the clearest example - are those Marvel has recently invested in and not yet monetised. That is a commercial reading as much as a narrative one, and commercial readings have historically been the more accurate of the two.

Why The Fox Contingent Is The Most Exposed Group

This is the clearest structural inference available, and we still rate it as speculation. Marvel has confirmed The X-Men for 15 December 2028, with Jake Schreier directing and Michael Lesslie writing, and has announced zero casting. Kevin Feige has indicated the plan leans on largely unknown young actors, and Schreier has publicly shot down viral fan-casting rumours.

That means the mutants arriving in 2028 are not the mutants in Doomsday. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and their colleagues are performing roles that a new cast will inherit within two years. A finale that gives the Fox era a conclusion is the tidiest possible way to clear the runway, and it is what a screenwriter in Michael Waldron's position would most plausibly do. It is also entirely unconfirmed, and Marvel has said nothing whatsoever about the fate of any of these characters.

The most exposed characters in Doomsday are not the ones with the weakest plot armour. They are the ones whose parts have already been recast for 2028.

Why Secret Wars Changes The Maths

The single most distorting factor in every survival prediction is that Doomsday is not an ending. Secret Wars follows twelve months later from the same directors and writer, and Feige has described it as the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga and a reset for what comes after. That has two consequences that most speculation ignores.

• Doomsday has no obligation to kill anyone. A first film in a two-part story can end on a defeat rather than a slaughter, exactly as Infinity War did with a snap that was subsequently reversed.
• Deaths in Doomsday may not be permanent. A film explicitly about colliding realities, followed by a film explicitly framed as a reset, has more mechanisms for reversal than any Marvel story ever made.
• The Secret Wars cast list is the real spoiler, which is precisely why Marvel has announced only one name for it. That blackout is a deliberate act of information control, and it is working.
• A reset can retire characters without killing them. Marvel can simply move on from a reality, which removes people from the board without a death scene and without closing a door.

That last point is underrated. The most likely outcome, in our view, is fewer on-screen deaths than fandom expects in December and a larger structural clearing-out in 2027. We hold that loosely.

What Would Make All Of This Wrong

Plenty, and it is worth naming the failure modes rather than pretending they do not exist. If Marvel has cast performers for Secret Wars without announcing them - which it has every incentive to do - our reasoning about who is needed for 2027 collapses immediately. If the reported 2028 and 2029 slots change, the franchise-obligation logic changes with them. And if Waldron's script simply does not use the two-part structure the way Infinity War and Endgame did, the pattern-matching underneath this entire article stops applying.

We would rather state that plainly than dress a guess as an insight.
