Biography
Adam Warlock was grown in a tank by a cabal of scientists who wanted a perfect being to rule the world for them. He escaped as a nameless entity called Him in Fantastic Four #66, drifted through Marvel's cosmos, and was renamed and given the Soul Gem by the High Evolutionary in Marvel Premiere #1 in 1972. That is the origin: a manufactured god who spent his existence refusing to be anyone's tool.
Jim Starlin turned him into the strangest hero Marvel published in the 1970s. Warlock discovered that his own future self, the tyrannical Magus, ruled a galactic church built on his corpse, and the only escape was to fold his own timeline in on itself and die. He did exactly that, and stayed dead for over a decade, which almost no Marvel character managed in that era.
He came back for The Infinity Gauntlet as the one being who could out-think Thanos, then held the assembled Gauntlet himself, then handed the Gems out to a hand-picked team so nobody could ever rebuild it. Warlock is Marvel's cosmic chess player: golden-skinned, joyless, permanently three moves ahead, and defined by the Soul Gem that hums on his forehead and eats souls.

Comics history
Lee and Kirby created Him in Fantastic Four #66 and #67 in 1967 as a byproduct of the Enclave's ambitions, then Roy Thomas and Gil Kane gave him his name, the Soul Gem and Counter-Earth in Marvel Premiere #1 in 1972. He was Marvel's messiah allegory, complete with a martyrdom on a Counter-Earth cross.
Jim Starlin took over and produced one of the most audacious runs of the decade across Strange Tales and Warlock in the mid-1970s, introducing the Magus, the Universal Church of Truth, Gamora and Pip the Troll. Warlock died at the end of Avengers Annual #7 in 1977, having stopped Thanos, and Marvel let it stand.
Starlin resurrected him for the buildup to The Infinity Gauntlet in 1991, where he took the Gauntlet from Nebula and immediately concluded no single being should hold it. Warlock and the Infinity Watch distributed the Gems among Gamora, Drax, Pip, Moondragon and himself. He has since anchored Annihilation-era events and the modern Guardians line.
