Biography
Tony Stark was an arms dealer who got what he had coming. Kidnapped while demonstrating a weapon, with shrapnel migrating toward his heart, he built a chest plate to stay alive and a suit of armour to escape, then spent the next sixty years trying to out-engineer his own conscience. Stan Lee has openly said he created Iron Man as a dare to himself: make readers love a rich military-industrial hawk in the middle of the 1960s.
The armour is the least interesting thing about him and the most fun to draw. What defines Stark is that he is a futurist who cannot stop building the thing that will hurt him: Ultron, the Sentinels of Liberty registration machinery, the drone armies, the sentient Extremis virus. His villains are almost always his own designs turned back on him, which is why Iron Man stories read like technothrillers with a hangover.
That hangover is literal. Iron Man is the mainstream superhero who is a recovering alcoholic, and Marvel has never quietly retired the fact. Demon in a Bottle put Stark on the floor of his own company in 1979; Armor Wars had him tear through friends and governments to reclaim stolen tech; Civil War made him the architect of a superhuman police state he genuinely believed was the lesser evil. He is right often enough to be dangerous and wrong often enough to be human.

Comics history
Iron Man spent the 1960s as a Cold War book before Tales of Suspense gave way to his own title in 1968. David Michelinie, Bob Layton, and John Romita Jr. defined him in the late 1970s with Demon in a Bottle in Iron Man #120-128, in which Justin Hammer manipulates his armour and Stark's drinking destroys him publicly. The same team returned for Armor Wars in 1990.
Warren Ellis and Adi Granov rebuilt the origin for the 2000s in Extremis, a six-issue story that made Stark a transhuman and directly shaped the 2008 film's design language. Matt Fraction's long Invincible Iron Man run followed, and then Kieron Gillen, Brian Michael Bendis, and Dan Slott each took turns dismantling and rebuilding the man.
His crossover ledger is brutal: he creates Ultron's lineage, sits on the Illuminati, drives the Superhuman Registration Act in Civil War, wipes his own brain to protect hero identities, goes to war with Captain Marvel in Civil War II, and dies or nearly dies often enough that the armour has become a legacy object passed to Rhodey, Pepper Potts, Riri Williams, and Doctor Doom.

- Stan Lee said the point of Iron Man was to make readers root for a wealthy weapons manufacturer during Vietnam, purely because it looked impossible.
- The first armour was grey. It was repainted gold in his second appearance because readers found the grey suit frightening, and the red-and-gold look followed in Tales of Suspense #48.

Hundreds. Marvel's own numbering runs well past Model 70, and that excludes one-off builds like the Hulkbuster, Thorbuster, Space Armor, and Godkiller. Stark treats the suit as software: he iterates constantly and discards freely.
Is Tony Stark the smartest person in the Marvel Universe?
