Billionaire arms manufacturer Tony Stark is ambushed in Afghanistan by insurgents armed with his own weapons, and wakes in a cave with shrapnel migrating toward his heart and an electromagnet keeping him alive. With fellow captive Ho Yinsen, he builds a miniaturised arc reactor and a crude suit of powered armour, and burns his way out.
Back in Malibu, the man who once called himself a merchant of death shuts down Stark Industries' weapons division and starts building something better in his basement. The film's real antagonist turns out to be much closer to home: Obadiah Stane, his father's old partner, who has been double-dealing the Ten Rings and who wants the reactor for himself.

The MarvelGossips verdict
Eighteen years on, this is still the cleanest origin story Marvel has ever told — a movie that trusts a charismatic actor and a garage full of tools over spectacle. The third act's Iron Monger showdown is the weakest thing in it, a problem the MCU would repeat for a decade. Everything before it remains close to perfect.
