Biography
Carl Lucas went to Seagate Prison for a crime he did not commit, framed by the man he grew up with. Inside, he volunteered for an experimental cell-regeneration process to shave time off his sentence. A sadistic guard sabotaged the equipment, the process overloaded, and Lucas walked out of the wreckage with skin that bullets bounce off. He broke out, changed his name to Luke Cage, and went home to Harlem.
His first instinct was capitalism. Cage hung a shingle as a Hero for Hire, taking cash jobs because nobody was paying men like him to save the world for free. That mercenary streak burned off fast. Partnered with Danny Rand as Power Man and Iron Fist, then folded into the Defenders and eventually the Avengers, Cage became the most reliable street-level hero in New York for the simple reason that he never leaves. Harlem is not a stop on his route. It is the point.
The modern Cage is a husband and a father. His marriage to Jessica Jones and their daughter Danielle rewired the character from a lone tough guy into Marvel's most grounded family man, one who has led an Avengers team, taken over the Thunderbolts, and served as Mayor of New York City. He still says Sweet Christmas. He still gets shot at daily. Neither has slowed him down.

Comics history
Hero for Hire #1 arrived in 1972 as Marvel's answer to the blaxploitation boom, and it worked: Cage was the first Black superhero to headline his own Marvel title. Archie Goodwin, George Tuska and John Romita Sr. gave him a yellow shirt, a tiara and a chain belt, and the book was renamed Luke Cage, Power Man by issue 17.
Sales sagged until Marvel made the smartest merger in its street-level history, pairing Cage with Danny Rand in Power Man and Iron Fist from 1978. Chris Claremont and Jo Duffy turned a cancellation salvage job into a genuine buddy classic that ran to 1986 and defined both characters.
Brian Michael Bendis reinvented him for the 2000s. Cage appeared throughout Alias as Jessica Jones' on-again lover, then became the moral anchor of New Avengers, refusing to register during Civil War and holding the underground team together. He married Jessica in New Avengers Annual #1.
After Siege, Steve Rogers handed Cage command of the Thunderbolts, putting an ex-convict in charge of rehabilitating convicts. In 2022's Devil's Reign he was elected Mayor of New York, forcing him to fight Kingpin on political ground rather than in an alley.
