Biography
James Proudstar's story starts with a funeral. His older brother John was Thunderbird, one of the new X-Men recruited in the 1970s, and he died on his second mission with the team, making him the shortest-serving member of the most famous line-up in mutant history. James blamed Charles Xavier, and being a grieving Apache teenager with superhuman strength, he did something about it: he took his dead brother's codename, enrolled in Emma Frost's Hellions, and set out to kill the man who had recruited John into an early grave.
He never went through with it, and the decision defined him. As Warpath he became a foundation member of Cable's X-Force and later the black-ops Uncanny X-Force, the strongest man in most rooms he walks into and the steadiest presence on teams full of killers. He fights with heightened senses and a pair of vibranium knives, and he carries losses that would break other characters, including the massacre of his people at Camp Verde by the Reavers. Krakoa gave him a nation instead of a strike team, but the job never changed: Warpath is who you send when subtlety has already failed.

Comics history
James Proudstar arrived in 1984 as a villain, a Hellion wearing his dead brother's name, which is one of Claremont's neatest tricks: a legacy character introduced as revenge rather than tribute. Rob Liefeld's X-Force claimed him in 1991 and rebuilt him as Warpath, and the character has been a fixture of the franchise's paramilitary corner ever since, from Peter Milligan and Fabian Nicieza's X-Force runs to Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force between 2010 and 2012, where his sheer decency worked as ballast against a team of assassins. He also got a live-action showing in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) as part of the future resistance.
