Biography
Scott Lang is the rare Marvel hero who became one by committing a felony. An electronics engineer with a burglary conviction behind him, he broke into Hank Pym's home and stole the Ant-Man suit because his daughter Cassie had a congenital heart condition and the only surgeon who could save her had been kidnapped. He got her the doctor. Pym, rather than pressing charges, told him to keep the suit.
That origin is why Scott is the most likeable man in the Avengers and the least confident. He is a genuinely gifted engineer, good enough to work for Reed Richards at the Baxter Building and Tony Stark at Stark Industries, and he has repaired technology neither of them could parse. But he is defined by being a father first, and every Scott Lang story that lands is about whether he can be trusted with something that matters.
The Pym Particles do the heavy lifting: shrinking to subatomic scale, growing to building height, and altering mass independently of size so an ant-sized punch can carry the force of a truck. Add the cybernetic helmet that lets him command insect colonies, and Scott is a walking infiltration package. Nick Spencer's Astonishing Ant-Man and Marvel's 2015 film both understood the same thing, that a heist protagonist works better as a superhero than as a scientist.

Comics history
Marvel Premiere #47 established Scott's origin in a single issue: the theft, the rescue of Dr. Erica Sondheim, and Hank Pym's blessing. He spent the 1980s in supporting roles across Iron Man and the Fantastic Four before John Byrne folded him into the Avengers proper in the 1990s.
He was believed killed during Avengers Disassembled in 2004, then revealed alive in The Children's Crusade, having been pulled out of time by Wanda's power. That same series killed his daughter Cassie, who had become the size-shifting Young Avenger Stature, a death that drove Scott's stories for years and eventually led him to found the Future Foundation.
Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas's Ant-Man: Second-Chance Man (2015) and The Astonishing Ant-Man reinvented him as a broke Miami security contractor whose employees are all ex-villains, and it is the funniest ongoing Marvel published that decade. Scott has also replaced Mister Fantastic on the Fantastic Four's roster, led the Future Foundation, and served with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Is Scott Lang the original Ant-Man?
No. Hank Pym created the Pym Particles and the identity in Tales to Astonish #27 in 1962. Scott stole the suit in 1979 to save his daughter's life and became the second Ant-Man with Pym's approval. Eric O'Grady later held the name as the Irredeemable Ant-Man.
How do Pym Particles work?
They shift matter into and out of the Kosmos dimension, removing or adding space between atoms rather than removing mass. That is why Scott stays as heavy as a grown man while ant-sized, and why Giant-Man is structurally unstable at extreme heights.
Who is Cassie Lang?
Scott's daughter, and a hero in her own right. She debuted with a congenital heart condition, gained size-shifting powers from Pym Particle exposure, and became Stature in Young Avengers and later Stinger. She was killed in Children's Crusade and eventually restored. The MCU has her as Cassie Lang, the young Ant-Man ally in Quantumania.
Why is Ant-Man important to Avengers: Endgame?
Because he survived the Quantum Realm. Scott was trapped there for five hours of subjective time while five years passed outside, which is the evidence the Avengers needed that quantum tunnelling can move a person through time. Without his return there is no time heist.
