Biography
Phil Coulson is the reason the MCU works. Before there was an Avengers team there was a man in a suit turning up at Tony Stark's house, being extremely polite, and refusing to leave. Clark Gregg's performance turned a functional exposition role into the audience's point of entry, the ordinary professional standing calmly next to gods, and his death in The Avengers is still the moment that convinced viewers the stakes were real.
Then he came back, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spent seven seasons building him into something much larger: Director of a rebuilt agency, a man carrying alien genetic material in his bloodstream, a mentor to Daisy Johnson, and eventually a Life Model Decoy of himself. Marvel Comics imported him in 2012 through Battle Scars, giving him a S.H.I.E.L.D. career, a history with Nick Fury Jr., and a permanent place in the agency's roster.

Comics history
Coulson was created for the films, then brought into comics continuity in Battle Scars #6 in 2012, the same series that introduced Nick Fury Jr. Christopher Yost, Matt Fraction, Cullen Bunn and Scot Eaton built him a comics-native history as Marcus Johnson's old army friend turned S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Mark Waid's S.H.I.E.L.D. series in 2014 made him a lead, positioning him as the agent who assembles bespoke hero teams for specific threats, a direct comics translation of his screen function.
Marvel later took him somewhere much darker in Secret Empire's aftermath, where a resurrected Coulson made a deal with Mephisto and became an antagonist hunting heroes, before eventually being restored. It remains one of the odder journeys for a character invented to hand out mission briefings.
