Biography
Arishem is the Celestial who decides. When a Host arrives to judge a world it has seeded, Arishem performs the assessment, and if the verdict is negative he marks the planet with an enormous thumb and Exitar the Exterminator carries out the sentence. Kirby introduced him in The Eternals in 1976 as the terrifying operational core of Celestial procedure: not evil, not cruel, simply a functionary reviewing a project on a scale no human mind can hold.
The MCU expanded him considerably. In Eternals he is the Prime Celestial who created the Eternals as synthetic beings, wiped and reprogrammed their memories, and dispatched them to Earth to protect the incubation of Tiamut, a new Celestial gestating inside the planet. He speaks in a voice like continents moving, and he is the reason the MCU's Eternals are a horror story about servants discovering their purpose.

Comics history
Kirby introduced him early in The Eternals in 1976 as the operational heart of the Fourth Host, the Celestial who renders judgment on Earth. His raised thumb became one of the most memorable images in Kirby's late Marvel work, a gesture of absolute power delivered without a word.
He has returned across Marvel's cosmic and Eternals stories as the constant in Celestial procedure, and Kieron Gillen's 2021 relaunch reasserted his role as the being who sets the terms every Eternal lives under.
