Biography

Sersi is the Eternal who stayed. While her people brooded in Olympia she moved to Manhattan, threw parties, took human lovers and enjoyed several thousand years of civilisation as it happened. She is also the myth of Circe, the enchantress who turned men into animals, which in Marvel terms means she is an Eternal whose power is transmuting matter with a touch.

Her Avengers tenure from the late 1980s made her a genuinely important Marvel character rather than a Kirby footnote. She joined the team, fell into a psionically bonded relationship with the Black Knight, and suffered the Eternal condition known as Mahd Wy'ry, a form of madness that comes from living too long with too much memory. Gemma Chan's 2021 film version is quieter and sadder, an Eternal in love with humanity who ends up holding the fate of the planet.

Comics history

Kirby introduced her in 1976 as the Eternal who liked people, immediately distinguishing her from her severe cousins. Her real ascent came when she joined the Avengers in the late 1980s, becoming a mainstay through the early nineties, entangled with the Black Knight through the Gann Josin bond and eventually breaking under Mahd Wy'ry in one of the era's better psychological arcs.

Neil Gaiman's 2006 Eternals restored her with the rest of the pantheon, and Kieron Gillen's 2021 relaunch used her as its moral centre. Her 2021 film appearance made her the most recognisable Eternal to general audiences, which would have amused Kirby enormously.

Trivia

  • She is the mythological Circe, and Marvel treats the Odyssey as a garbled account of an actual Eternal.
  • Sersi joined the Avengers in the late 1980s and served for years as a core member.
  • Her psychic Gann Josin bond with the Black Knight is one of Marvel's strangest romances.
  • Mahd Wy'ry, the Eternal madness caused by too much accumulated memory, nearly destroyed her.
  • Gemma Chan played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel in 2019 before returning to the MCU as Sersi in 2021.
  • Her transmutation power works on living beings, which is why the Circe myth involves men turning into pigs.

Frequently asked

What are Sersi's powers?
She transmutes matter by touch, converting objects and living beings into other forms entirely. She also has the standard Eternal package: immortality, enhanced strength and durability, illusion casting and the ability to join the Uni-Mind.
Is Sersi really Circe from Greek myth?
In Marvel continuity, yes. The Eternals lived among early humans and their exploits became myth, so the enchantress who turned Odysseus' crew into animals was an Eternal transmuting matter with her hands.
Was Sersi an Avenger?
Yes, and for a substantial run. She joined in the late 1980s and served through the early nineties, including her relationship with the Black Knight and her struggle with Mahd Wy'ry, the Eternal madness that comes from millennia of memory.
