Biography
Ikaris is Kirby's central Eternal, the soldier who fronted The Eternals #1 in 1976 living on Earth under the name Ike Harris and guiding a human archaeologist toward the truth about the Celestials. His name comes from his son Icarus, who flew too high and died, and the Greek myth grew out of that loss, which is exactly the sort of mythological retrofitting Kirby built the whole series on.
He is the most conventionally heroic Eternal and the most rigid. Ikaris flies, fires cosmic beams from his eyes, and follows the Celestials' design with a devotion that has repeatedly put him at odds with Sersi, Thena and Zuras. Chloé Zhao's 2021 film weaponised that loyalty: Richard Madden's Ikaris knew about the Emergence for centuries, kept it secret, killed Ajak, and ended by flying into the sun rather than face what he had done.

Comics history
Kirby's 1976 series positioned Ikaris as the reader's guide, an Eternal walking among humans as the Fourth Host arrived. The book was cancelled after nineteen issues but its ideas were too big to bury, and Roy Thomas immediately folded the Eternals into Thor, where Ikaris fought alongside and against Asgard.
He has since led the Eternals as Prime Eternal, appeared alongside the Avengers, and survived Neil Gaiman's 2006 reboot, which stripped the Eternals of their memories and left them living as humans until they woke up. Kieron Gillen's 2021 relaunch put Ikaris back at the centre with a much harsher reading of Eternal morality and the machinery that resurrects them.
