Biography

Ajak is the Eternal appointed to communicate with the Celestials, which means he spends his existence relaying instructions from beings who consider conversation beneath them. Kirby introduced him as the priest and liaison of the Host, living for millennia among the peoples of the Americas, where he was worshipped under names that later became Mesoamerican deities, and the strain of that role eventually broke him.

The MCU turned Ajak into Salma Hayek's Prime Eternal, the team's leader and healer, with the same job description and a much stronger conscience. She has spent thousands of years relaying Arishem's orders, learns the truth about the Emergence, decides Earth is worth saving, and is murdered by Ikaris in the film's opening act, which is the inciting incident for everything that follows.

Comics history

Kirby's Ajak appeared early in The Eternals as the Host's designated priest, based in South America and worshipped by ancient peoples. His role as the Celestials' translator made him structurally essential and personally miserable, and later stories pushed him toward madness as the Fourth Host's judgment approached.

The character has recurred through the Eternals revivals and Gillen's relaunch as the pantheon's link to its makers, the one Eternal who knows what the Celestials actually want and cannot say.

  • In Kirby's comics Ajak is male and served as the Celestials' priest in South America, worshipped under names that became Mesoamerican deities.
  • The MCU gender-swapped the role and made Ajak the Prime Eternal and the team's healer.
  • Salma Hayek's Ajak is killed by Ikaris before the film's midpoint, which drives the entire plot.
  • Ajak is the only Eternal permitted to communicate directly with Arishem, which makes the position closer to servitude than privilege.

Frequently asked

What is Ajak's role among the Eternals?
Ajak is the Celestials' intermediary, the only Eternal able to communicate directly with the Host. In the comics that means acting as their priest; in the MCU it also comes with leadership of the team and the burden of knowing the Emergence is coming.
Why is Ajak a woman in the MCU?
Kirby's Ajak was male. Chloé Zhao's film recast the role with Salma Hayek and made Ajak the Prime Eternal and healer, which gave the team a maternal centre whose death in the first act destabilises everyone.
