Biography
Natasha Romanoff was created as a Soviet femme fatale sent to destroy Tony Stark, and Marvel has spent sixty years turning that villain into its most competent professional. She was taken as a child, raised in the Red Room, given false memories of a ballet career, dosed with a variant of the Super-Soldier Serum, and trained until she was the best-conditioned human intelligence asset on Earth. Then she defected.
She has no powers worth the name. What she has is tradecraft, a fighting style built for lethality rather than display, and a biotech regimen that slowed her ageing and hardened her immune system. She reads rooms the way Reed Richards reads equations. In a universe of gods she is the person who takes the assignment nobody else can be trusted with, which is why Nick Fury keeps her on the payroll and why the Avengers keep her in the room.
The through-line of every good Widow story is the ledger. Natasha does not believe she is redeemable and works anyway, and Marvel has resisted the temptation to let her off the hook. She was killed in Secret Empire while trying to assassinate the Hydra Steve Rogers. She traded her life for the Soul Stone on Vormir. Both times, the point was the same: the debt is not payable, but she pays toward it.

Comics history
Natasha spent her first years as an Iron Man villain, then defected, romanced Hawkeye, and became a fixture of Daredevil's book in the 1970s, where she was co-headliner for a stretch. She led the Champions in 1975 and joined the Avengers properly under Roger Stern's tenure, eventually chairing the team.
Her modern identity comes out of the Marvel Knights era. Devin Grayson and J.G. Jones's 1999 Black Widow miniseries set her against Yelena Belova, a younger Red Room graduate convinced she is the rightful Widow, and the pairing has anchored her stories ever since. Richard Morgan's Homecoming and Marjorie Liu's work developed the biotech conspiracy behind her longevity.
Marjorie Liu, Duane Swierczynski, and then Nathan Edmondson with Phil Noto wrote acclaimed solo runs, but the standout is Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's 2016 Black Widow, which opens with her on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. and reads like an action film on paper. She died in Secret Empire (2017) at the hands of the Hydra-aligned Steve Rogers and returned in Web of Black Widow and Kelly Thompson's 2020 run.
