A father who tried to grow his arm back and lost his son instead.
Biography
Curt Connors was an army surgeon who lost his right arm to a battlefield explosion and a geneticist good enough to think he could fix it. His reptilian regeneration serum worked, which is the tragedy — the arm came back and took the rest of him with it. Connors is one of the very few Spider-Man villains Peter Parker genuinely likes: a mentor, a colleague and a friend who has to be talked down rather than beaten.
The Lizard itself is not simply Connors with scales. Marvel has developed it as a distinct reptile-brain intelligence that wants the human world dismantled and the cold-blooded ascendant, and it despises Connors' family attachments as weakness. Zeb Wells' Shed (2010) is the point of no return: the Lizard kills Connors' son Billy, then deliberately suppresses the human personality, leaving Curt trapped and aware inside a body that is finally free of him.

Comics history
Connors debuted as both scientist and monster in Amazing Spider-Man #6 (1963) and became a fixture of Peter Parker's academic life, which is what gives the Lizard its weight — Spider-Man is always fighting a friend.
Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo's Shed (Amazing Spider-Man #630-633, 2010) is the definitive modern take, with the Lizard murdering Connors' son and permanently subsuming his human mind. Later stories restored Connors in fragile, guilt-ridden form, and Dan Slott used him as a reluctant Parker Industries employee working under the surname Elliot.
