Biography

On Earth-90214 it is 1933, the Depression is grinding New York down, and Peter Parker is a young activist journalist working with Ben Urich to expose a crime boss called the Goblin — a man who literally eats his enemies. Bitten by a spider that emerges from a smuggled artefact, Peter takes the powers, a trench coat, a fedora and a revolver, and becomes something considerably closer to the Shadow than to the friendly neighbourhood original.

The tonal shift is the appeal. Noir Peter kills, works with a Felicia Hardy who runs a speakeasy, and operates in a world where the villains are gangsters, eugenicists and fascists rather than costumed eccentrics. He became a breakout of Marvel's short-lived Noir imprint, joined the Spider-Army in Spider-Verse, and Nicolas Cage's performance in Into the Spider-Verse — a black-and-white man who cannot see colour — turned a deep cut into a fan favourite, leading to a live-action Noir series with Cage attached.

Comics history

David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky and Carmine Di Giandomenico launched Spider-Man Noir in 2009 as part of Marvel's Noir line, reimagining the origin against the Depression, Tammany-era corruption and rising fascism. He returned in Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without a Face, became a mainstay of Spider-Verse and the Web Warriors, and the animated films made him one of the most recognisable alternate Spiders in the franchise.

  • A live-action Noir series with Nicolas Cage was developed for Prime Video, moving the character outside the Spider-Man name.

Frequently asked

Who is Spider-Man Noir?
The Peter Parker of Earth-90214, operating in Depression-era 1933 New York. He debuted in Spider-Man Noir #1 (2009), fights gangsters rather than supervillains, manipulates shadow instead of relying solely on webbing, and carries a gun.
Does Spider-Man Noir kill?
Yes, which is the sharpest break from other versions. His world is one of organised crime and rising fascism, without the superhero conventions that keep other Spiders from crossing that line — and Spider-Verse stories use it as a point of friction with the rest of the Spider-Army.
