Biography

Wolfgang von Strucker was a Prussian aristocrat and Nazi officer who came out of the Second World War understanding something the rest of the Reich did not: ideologies survive better as networks than as nations. He built Hydra into exactly that, a decentralised organisation with cells that regenerate faster than any government can destroy them, and he has been Nick Fury's opposite number for sixty years of publication.

He is also functionally immortal. The Death Spore virus in his blood slows his ageing and can be used as a weapon, and he has cheated death through clones, resurrections and Hydra's own biotechnology enough times that killing him is treated as an administrative delay. The MCU version, played by Thomas Kretschmann, ran the Sokovian facility where the Maximoff twins got their powers.

Comics history

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Strucker in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #5 in 1964 as a Nazi officer, then retroactively made him the founder and Supreme Hydra of the organisation Fury spends his career fighting. The rivalry predates S.H.I.E.L.D. itself.

He has died and returned repeatedly, including a memorable stretch where his Hydra cells kept operating without him. Jonathan Hickman's Secret Warriors made Strucker's manipulation of Fury the spine of the run, revealing that Hydra had been inside S.H.I.E.L.D. from the day it was founded, a reveal the films borrowed directly.

Frequently asked

Did Baron Strucker found Hydra?
In Marvel continuity, yes. Strucker built Hydra from the remnants of Nazi intelligence into a decentralised global network, specifically designed so that destroying its leadership does not destroy the organisation.
How is Strucker still alive?
The Death Spore virus engineered into his bloodstream dramatically slows his ageing, and Hydra maintains clone bodies and resurrection technology on his behalf. His deaths are consistently temporary.
