Biography
Eric Brooks was born in a London brothel to a mother dying on the table, because the physician called to deliver him was the vampire Deacon Frost. Frost fed on Tara Brooks during the birth, and the enzymes in his saliva passed into her bloodstream and into her son. Eric came out with every vampire strength and almost none of the weaknesses: he ages slowly, he heals fast, he can smell the undead across a room, and sunlight does nothing to him at all. The Daywalker.
He was raised by Jamal Afari, a jazz trumpeter and vampire hunter who found the boy fighting a nest at thirteen and taught him the trade properly. Blade's first two decades in print had him as a supporting player in The Tomb of Dracula, wielding teak-wood knives and picking fights with the Lord of Vampires himself. He was never the star of that book, but he was the only member of the cast Dracula openly considered a genuine threat.
Then the 1998 film happened, and Blade became the most consequential Marvel character of the modern era for reasons that have nothing to do with the comics. Wesley Snipes's R-rated adaptation was Marvel's first genuine box-office success and the film that proved comic-book adaptations could be commercially serious, four years before Spider-Man and ten before Iron Man. The comics repaid it by giving Eric the sword, the trench coat, and the hunter-of-hunters attitude the film invented.

Comics history
Blade spent the 1970s in Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan's The Tomb of Dracula, one of the best-regarded horror series Marvel has published, as a supporting hunter alongside Rachel van Helsing and Quincy Harker. He carried teak throwing knives rather than a sword, and his defining trait was that Dracula could not read his mind or dominate him.
The 1990s put him at the centre of Marvel's horror line. Nightstalkers (1992) paired him with Hannibal King and Frank Drake, and the Midnight Sons crossover tied him to Ghost Rider, Morbius, and Doctor Strange. The film trilogy then reshaped the character on the page: the katana, the leather, the shades, and the harder edge all migrated back into continuity.
In the modern era Blade has led MI13's supernatural defence of Britain, served on the Avengers under Jason Aaron's run, briefly ruled as a reluctant figure in vampire politics, and headlined solo series that treat him as Earth's designated occult first responder. Marvel's 2021 to 2023 vampire-nation stories, including the Blade ongoing and the vampire war events, made him the axis of the entire horror corner.
