Character profile
Shuri
Shuri of Wakanda
The smartest person in the most advanced nation on Earth.
Biography
Shuri is T'Challa's younger sister, the head of Wakanda's Design Group, and by most measures the most gifted engineer on the planet. Vibranium is the rarest material in the Marvel Universe and she treats it like a sketchpad: kinetic-absorbing armour, sonic weaponry, remote-piloted aircraft, nanotech that assembles a Panther habit around the wearer in a second.
She has also worn the mantle. When T'Challa was left comatose by Doctor Doom, Shuri took the Black Panther identity outright rather than caretaking it, passing the trials and holding the throne through some of Wakanda's worst crises. Nnedi Okorafor's later run pushed her further, transforming her into the Aja-Adanna, able to dissolve into a swarm of energy and touch the ancestral plane. Letitia Wright's screen version made her a global favourite twice over: first as the comic relief who builds everything, and then as the grieving heir who takes the mask.

Comics history
Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr. introduced Shuri in the 2005 Black Panther relaunch as T'Challa's sister and a rival claimant to the mantle, an ambitious princess who wanted the job on merit. She got it in 2009, taking the Black Panther identity while T'Challa lay comatose after Doctor Doom's assault, and held it through Doomwar and the Fear Itself era.
She was killed defending Wakanda during Jonathan Hickman's New Avengers run, and later resurrected via the ancestral plane in Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther, returning changed.
Nnedi Okorafor's 2018 Shuri series gave her a solo identity and the Aja-Adanna transformation, framing her as a scientist-mystic rather than a straightforward legacy hero, and she has since operated across Wakanda, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four's orbit.
