Biography
The Facility wanted Weapon X repeated, and it had only a damaged sample to work from. Twenty-two attempts failed. The twenty-third produced a girl, and Dr. Sarah Kinney — the geneticist who carried her to term — was ordered to raise her as an asset with a number instead of a name. Laura was trained to kill, conditioned to obey a chemical trigger scent, and priced out to buyers. Her mother's last act was to name her, tell her she was loved, and die in her arms after Laura was made to kill her.
What makes Laura more than a Wolverine variant is the work she put in after escaping. She cut herself to feel something, drifted through New York as a teenage runaway, then found structure with the X-Men, X-Force and Avengers Academy — three very different attempts at being someone. When Logan died, she took the Wolverine name and the mask and treated it as a standard to live up to rather than an inheritance. Add Gabby, her cloned little sister, and Laura finally had the thing the Facility never planned for: a family she chose.

Comics history
Laura is one of the rare characters created for television who went on to conquer the comics. Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost built her for X-Men: Evolution, then brought her to print in NYX before Marvel handed her miniseries, a New X-Men berth and eventually the Wolverine title itself. Tom Taylor's All-New Wolverine is the run that cemented her, adding Gabby, a genuine sense of humour and a supporting cast that belonged to Laura rather than to Logan. From the Ashes has kept her working under both names, as Wolverine and as Laura Kinney.

- The 23 is literal: she was the twenty-third viable attempt at cloning Wolverine from a damaged genetic sample.
- The foot claws are her own addition to the Wolverine template, and they let her attack from angles that would break Logan's stance.

Genetically she is closer to his twin than his child — Laura was cloned from a damaged sample of Logan's DNA, with Sarah Kinney supplying the second X chromosome and carrying the pregnancy. Marvel and Laura herself treat the relationship as father and daughter anyway, because that is what it grew into.
Why does X-23 have foot claws?
The Facility engineered her with two claws in each hand and one in each foot to maximise her lethality in close quarters. It produced a kicking, spinning fighting style that looks nothing like Logan's brawling, and it is the clearest sign she was designed rather than born.
